Goodbye
22nd July, 2008
As always, the end of the year is time for sorrowful but sweet goodbyes: sorrowful because saying goodbye is always sad, but sweet because we know that things must change, and that new and exciting things lie ahead. Year Six, thank you for your amazing assembly, and Mrs Morgan, thank you for so many years of dedicated hard work. Goodbye, also, to Mrs Yarham and Mrs Whisken - you will be missed!
Another year ended, and please - look back over the website to remember some excellent moments throughout the year; our residential visits, one or two extra-special classroom events and plenty of good hard work! Have a wonderful summer break, and return refreshed after the holidays, ready to explore those new and exciting things...
Lobsters
9th July, 2008
Billy's dad Daniel, a local fisherman in Wells, visited France Class with a lobster, some crabs and starfishes as part of our community fishing project. The Reception and Year One children were very excited about meeting the sea creatures, but not as excited as one of the crabs which jumped out of the tray and tried to escape across the classroom floor! Luckily Daniel was able to catch it before it got too far away!
The children had lots of questions for Daniel which they had written during their Literacy lessons and we found out so much information about lobsters and crabs. Mrs Stratton was amazed at how much there was to find out about lobsters! Did you know that lobsters can have ten thousand babies? Many thanks to Daniel for giving up his time to come and see us.
Sea Life!
8th July, 2008
France and Germany Classes had a fantastic day out at the Sea Life Centre in Hunstanton. They watched the penguins, otters and seals being fed and then were joined by some hungry ducks at lunch time! In the shark lagoon they found out some amazing facts about sharks. The Centre provided a Touch Pool session for us where everyone got the chance to hold a giant spiky starfish!
In our photos you can see a very tolerant giant Spiky Starfish, and look - there were some rather unusual creatures lurking at the bottom of the Shark Lagoon!
Dressing Crabs
8th July, 2008
Mr Frary, Stephanie's dad, kindly came into Nursery to show the children how to dress a fresh crab. Mr Speck's class came to watch, too. The children also had the chance to taste the crab meat and ask questions about crab fishing at Wells-next-the-Sea. A big thank you to Stephanies Dad for coming in!

Archery News
6th July, 2008
This weekend, at the Grand National Archery Society's Junior National Championships, held at the National Sports Centre, Lilleshall, Ben from Year 5, shooting in the under 12 section (Bristol lV) scored 831 to take 11th place. On the previous day, Saturday, shooting in the Junior National FITA Star and Metric tournaments, he scored 951 in the under 12 section (Metric lV) to take 8th place.
Congratulations, Ben!
A Sea Song In A Day - Salthouse Art Exhibition 2008
4th July, 2008
Year Four had a wonderful time at Salthouse on Friday. Our luxury coach took us right to Salthouse village hall where Jane Wells and her friend Mark met us. Only an hour later, and we'd already thought of the first verse of our sea song, and worked out part of the melody.
In fact, we just got the lyrics finished in time for lunch, and then we took a short break to visit the Salthouse Art Exhibition. It was great - the isolation chamber was a firm favourite, although we did cheat and go in three at a time. Peter was nearly eaten by a giant wave sculpture, and several children decided the luminous fibre optic jellyfish was following them.
Back to the village hall, and we broke out the ocean drums, violins, guitars and all manner of other instruments. Everybody played something - even Sian's mum was equipped with a drum! Mark impressed everyone with his guitar, and recorded the whole thing for us. It's being mixed over the weekend, and we'll hear the finished product for the first time on Monday... fingers crossed!
Fish And Ships
4th July, 2008
On Friday, Year 5 children spent a half day session with Andrew Rufford, learning how to carry out the Cyanotype process. This was invented by Sir John Herschel, the Astronomer Royal, in 1842. He developed this process so he could make accurate copies of his designs, calculations and notes, in the same way as we use a photocopier today. Cyanotypes are also known as blueprints or sunprints.
The children had to listen very carefully to Andrew's instructions to enable them to produce their pictures and were thrilled with their results. It was very enjoyable and the children were amazed at what they were able to produce without using modern technology.
Nursery Ice-Cream Day
27th June, 2008
We were very lucky in the Nursery to have Zak's Dad come into Nursery to make us special ice creams for our 'Ice Cream Day!'
Zak's Dad is a chef at Fakenham Garden Centre and he kindly brought in special cones, ice cream, flakes and toppings for us all. Thank you very much Mr Moore!
We made a pretend ice cream shop in the Nursery. We dressed up for a day at the beach and bought an ice cream at the ice cream shop with out pretend money. Yum yum!
Gallions Gallery
25th June, 2008
It was only last week that Year Six waved goodbye to their friends from the Gallions Primary School in London, and not long now until they hop on a coach for another visit.
In the meantime, there are some happy memories in the Galleries section of the website.
Exotic Creatures Of The Deep
24th June, 2008
Year Three were joined by Katie from the Norfolk Dance Group for a two hour workshop. We had great fun imitating crabs, jellyfish, shoals of fish and sea monsters. Our picture shows Daniel's group being a fearsome sea monster.
Catching Up With Year 5
23rd June, 2008
Well, it's been a busy time for Italy class. We have been getting fully involved in the fishing project.
The Mural is beginning to look fantastic.
Our visit to the lifeboat station was great fun. Allen, the coxswain, was asked lots of questions by the class and set he them a challenge. Well done Jessica, Luke, Samantha, Kieran... and Mrs Jennings, for being ready and able. Thank you also to Allen for his time.
After our visit we went back to the beach and made coastal creatures. We had to think about where they would live, how they would move and what they would eat. There was a suggestion that they might eat teachers. Fortunately teachers natural habitat is the classroom, not the beach... so we got away with that one!
Finally, thank you Rozzie for showing the class how to make felt, these pieces are going to really make our fabric collages stand out.
Net-making
18th June, 2008
Year Three had a wonderful time when Cyril Southerland came in to show them how fishing nets were made. They even had a go themselves...
A Short Concert
17th June, 2008
Once again, our violinists performed for us in assembly. It's hard to believe that they've made so much progress since September.
What's even more exciting, is that some of our students are very near to taking their grade 1 violin examinations - Mrs Coleman says they'll be up to scratch in only another term. Keep up the hard work, and don't forget to practise!
A Knotty Afternoon
16th June, 2008
Year 4 had a wonderful time on Monday afternoon with Geoff Youngman, an expert in tying knots of all kinds. If you want to see the kinds of wonderful, decorative knots Geoff can tie, visit his website here. Year Four had a super time, and found out how to tie a bowline and a reef knot. They then had a go at a sheep shank, although that was a little bit too hard for some of us!
But it wasn't just Year 4 who enjoyed themselves: Geoff emailed to say 'It gave me great pleasure in coming to my old school and talking to the pupils in year 4 about working with rope and tying knots, please thank them on my behalf for giving me such good attention throughout and for being so well behaved. I very much hope that they enjoyed the session and were able to learn something from it.'
Well done Year 4, and thank you Mr Youngman - we had a great time!
North Norfolk Junior Triathlon
14th June, 2008
Harriet, Josh and Abbie represented Wells Primary school in the North Norfolk Junior Triathlon on Saturday the 14th of June, at the Alderman Peel High School. They did extremely well, and took part against members of Triathlon clubs from all over England. Well done!
'Bytes and Bites' Wells Primary Food and ICT morning.
12th June, 2008
On Thursday 12th June Y6 from Wells Primary School spent a morning at Alderman Peel High School. Some members of Y6 joined five Y9 Food Technology students and Miss Davies. The rest of Y6 joined Mr Thompson in an ICT lesson.
The food group had 'hands on' experience of preparing a healthy two course meal and a drink. The ICT students worked on the computers to produce a game, based on the '5 a day' fruit and vegetables guideline.
The two groups eventually came together, to eat the lunch prepared by the Y6 food group. Suitably fortified, some members of Y6 went off to a local cricket tournament. This reinforced the link between the importance of food as fuel in the body for physical activities.
The 'power booster smoothie' was a hit and the plates of 'leek and mushroom croustades' also disappeared.
Careful Crab Catching
11th June, 2008
Did you see that Wells-next-the-Sea has been in the news? Students from Cambridge University have produced a leaflet explaining to people how they can look after the crabs they catch while gillying on the quayside. Some of our pupils went down the to quay with Mrs Jennings for a photo shoot, and the two students visited us in school to tell us more.
Look out for our school in The Times this weekend!
Book Fair
4th June, 2008
Our Fishing Project has begun! One of the earliest events is the book fair. Everyone had a great time looking at the books this afternoon, and those who'd saved up some pennies were able to return after school and buy a little something to take home.
More Sporting Success
23rd May, 2008
Well done to our cricketers, who once again did the school proud. Excellent work...
Carnival Attendants
23rd May, 2008
A surprise for four of our children in assembly today, as mysterious white envelopes were handed out. Finlay opened his and read out to us that he had been chosen as one of the Carnival Queen's attendants for Wells Carnival 2008. Well done to Finlay, Jessikae, Holly and Connor - we can't wait to see the photos!
Year Five Assembly
22nd May, 2008
Year Five told us all about their recent trip to Brancaster. The farm was a clear favourite, and we were particularly delighted to find out that Ben thought the piglets were so cute he 'just wanted to pick them up and dip them in his coffee'. Charlotte and Mrs Gates waved their knitting at everyone, and Nathanial described the cycling to us. It sounded like great fun!
Hermit Crabs!
22nd May, 2008
Billy brought two hermit crabs to school today. They've become quite famous and have visited most classrooms. Did you have a visit from Danny and Chloe the wandering hermits?
Silver And Gold
20th May, 2008
Year 6 presented 'Silver And Gold', a song about friendship. The children choreographed it themselves and organised the percussion, main singers, backing singers and dancers. Reception, Year One and Year Two enjoyed the performance very much.
Noah's Ark
21st May, 2008
Year 1 and 2 came down to the Nursery today to give us a short assembly about the story of Noah and the ark. They showed us their fantastic moving pictures that they had made in technology.
Table Tennis Triumph
15th May, 2008
Congratulations to our Table Tennis champions, who once again beat Burnham Market's players. It was a hard game against some very good opponents, as you can tell from the final score of 8 games to 7. Well done all round, to everyone who played.
A Visit To Sennowe Park
14th May, 2008
Year Three and Four had a great time at Sennowe Park learning all about the outdoors life. We found out about fishing, beekeeping and forestry. There were gamekeepers to talk to, arable farming equipment to see and a cow and her calf to visit. We munched our picnic at the edge of a field, and went to see the hounds and the retrievers. Great fun!
Football Fun
9th May, 2008
On Friday 9th May 2008, Norman Lamb visited Wells-Next-The Sea Primary and Nursery School to watch a five-a-side football match between the Year Six children and to see the school's new football kit in action. The school purchased the new kit in a variety of different sizes with a £400 grant from the Football Foundation. Norman Lamb wrote to the school to say that the grant was available and his visit was the school's way of saying 'thank you' to him for this information, without which we would not have known about the Football Foundation grant.
During his visit to the school, Mr. Lamb met with the school's PE Co-ordinator and Primary Link Teacher for PE, Miss Rachel Vincent, who made the initial grant application, and Mr. David Baldwin, the school's Deputy Head Teacher and Year Six teacher. Mr. Lamb watched a five-a-side football match involving the Year Six children and commented upon the quality of football displayed and the children's good sportsmanship. Mr. Lamb also showed us his own football skills, taking several well-placed penalties against our two goalkeepers and joining the team for the last five minutes of the match. Miss Vincent also tried her hand at taking a couple of penalties, but was thwarted by the skills of the two goalkeepers.
The children enjoyed their time with Mr. Lamb and thanked him for making the school aware of the Football Foundation grant.
A Musical Assembly
2nd May, 2008
Year Five gave a most impressive display of their musical skills in assembly today. They've been hard at work learning the clarinet every Thursday afternoon, and their hard work has really paid off.
Their clarinet skills are amazing - there was very little squeaking and lots and lots of beautiful music. Well done!
On The Radio
1st May, 2008
Did you hear our poets reading their work on Norfolk Radio this morning? Wally Webb visited our school to find out about our work with the Saw Project and our winning entries to the Poetry-next-the-Sea Festival.
Our prize-winning authors will also be reading their poems at the Poetry Festival this weekend. We've added their poems to the Poetry Cupboard and for a limited time you should be able to visit the BBC's iPlayer to hear the archived version of the radio broadcast.
Well done to Joshua from Year 2, Leah from Year 3, Tom from Year 4, Archie-Mac from Year 5 and Alice from Year 6.
School Council
1st May, 2008
The new School Council recently had their second meeting of the half term. Don't forget to see your School Council representative if you have any suggestions or comments about how you could make our school better. They're eager to help!
Persuasive Pupil Power
30th April, 2008
Year 5 children have been studying persuasive writing in their Literacy, so they decided to put their powers of persuasion to the test by writing to EDF Energy about the zebra crossing lights on Polka Road, Wells.
Although the new crossing was finished in January, the power was not connected. The whole class wrote individual letters which were sent to EDF Energy and the Town Council.
It was noted by many people that shortly after sending the letter, workmen arrived to connect the power supply to the lights. Also, Mr Fisher received a letter from EDF Energy which thanked the children for writing and asked them to note that the power was now connected.
Year 5 were thrilled that their letters had been responded to, but were even more pleased to see the crossing lights flashing!
Our Mathletics Champion
28th April, 2008
You may remember our Mathletics wizard, Sian, getting a certificate in assembly on Friday for her hard work battling away at mental maths with opponents from around the world.
Even more exciting - she's made it on to the front page of the Mathletics website as one of the 100 top students in the whole world! Excellent, Sian!
How Hill 2008
24th April, 2008
We hope everyone enjoyed our How Hill assembly as much as we enjoyed going to How Hill! It was nice to be able to tell everyone about the fun activities we did, including our sighting of an otter.
This painting is by Nathan, and you can see some of the photos from our visit in the gallery section of the website.
Table Tennis Club
18th April, 2008
Table Tennis Club started again today. Everyone had a great time over in the Hall, and we think we might have one or two champions in the making!
Back To School!
18th April, 2008
Lots of certificates to be handed out in assembly today for parents, grandparents and carers who have taken part in our maths course for adults. Everyone has done really well, learning all about the ways we teach maths now which might have changed a little since some of us were in school!
Norfolk Children's Book Awards
10th April, 2008
You might remember Year 4 taking part in the Norfolk Libraries' Children's Book Awards earlier this year. They had a box of books to read, emailed Dawn at the Library with their comments, and voted for their favourite books. They also drew their own versions of the book covers, and sent them off to the Library.
Everyone received a certificate for their hard work, and special congratulations to Sian, whose redesign of 'The Incredible Book-Eating Boy' won a prize!
A new term and a new website!
8th April, 2008
Welcome back from the Easter holiday! Did you manage to play in the snow on Easter Sunday before it all melted?
But look at our website! The Website Gnomes have been working away in the ICT cupboard to completely redesign the school website, and even though we've paid them in shiny golden Easter eggs, they might have made one or two mistakes. If you spot a missing image or a link that doesn't go anywhere, leave a note in the guestbook and we'll get it sorted!

Parents and children from Key Stage 2 made Easter cards and gift boxes during our Easter activity workshop. There was a good turnout and everyone was pleased with the crafts they'd made.
Many thanks to Mrs Vertigan for showing the adults how to make such a professional card - Mrs Vertigan, your talents are endless!
Environmental Art
10th March, 2008
The Nursery have been working hard during Environmental Education fortnight. They've used twigs to make beautiful mobiles for their tree. Why not find a moment at playtime to admire them?
In other Environmental Education fortnight news, Year 3 didn't seem too downhearted as they trudged out into the wind and rain with their bags and suitcases this morning. We're hoping the weather clears up for their two day visit to the Wells Field Study Centre, and that they don't get too wet while they enjoy themselves.
Kneesy-peasy
7th March, 2008
Hi everyone! It's that old Mrs Morgan keeping in touch, and letting you know how things are going. As most of you know, I went into the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital on Tuesday of last week to have a brand new knee fitted to my right leg. Isn't it amazing what the medical profession can do these days? They gave me some medicine to send me off to sleep and, when I woke up again, I found myself in a hospital bed, hooked up to more medicine to stop things hurting, and with a bandaged knee.
They let me have quite a good sleep on Tuesday night, but on Wednesday they really began to boss me about. I expect that's quite a funny picture isn't it? Bossy Mrs Morgan being bossed about by young nurses, and having to do as she was told! I was a very good patient and listened carefully to instructions. I felt extraordinarily proud of myself when I made myself get out of bed on the Thursday and walk to the loo using my ultra-cool walking frame. I got a round of applause for that! If I'd been at school I would probably have deserved the Worker of the Week award.
I did my very best, and thought carefully about how to deal with things when I wasn't too sure I'd really understood the instructions. It made me really sympathise with all of you in the classroom. I got home last Friday, and I expect the idea of being at home all day with nothing to do but watch tv, read or listen to the radio whilst doing a few leg strengthening exercises sounds quite pleasant when the rest of you have to get up and get to school on these cold mornings. However, I can assure you that is it unbelievably, horrendously, excrutiatingly BORING. I really miss school and all of you. OK now - who's up for checking my work for me? Have I remembered all my capital letters and full stops?
Valentine Disco Fun!
8th February, 2008
One or two cards and presents exchanged hands at the Valentine's Disco - we have the photographic evidence! Of course, we're far too nice to reveal all; your secrets are safe with us, Year 6!
Big thanks to the PFA and their dedicated team of helpers.
Blast Off!
8th February, 2008
Year 4 were finally able to launch their rockets after windy weather postponed their launch two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Year 3 had been hard at work making their own launchpads and rockets. Whose rockets would fly the highest?
It was amazing to see the rockets shoot high into the air. There was very little wind, but still
many of the rockets came down on the roof of the Children's Centre, and one or two came down on the other side. The final result? A draw!
Xin Nian Kuai Le!
7th February, 2008
Everyone enjoyed the assembly from Germany class, which featured a dancing Chinese dragon, lots of noisy drums and lucky red packages. We also heard the story of how the animals had years named after them, acted out with beautiful masks. A peaceful song finished off the assembly perfectly. Well done, Germany class!

After the three games, the winning player scored a point for their team. After some closely-fought matches, the team from Wells won by seven games to three (7-3). Congratulations to James, Joe, Fletcher and Maddie, who displayed some good skills and great team spirit. We look forward to the return match of Burnham Market.

To help them with this topic they had a visit from Megan Dennis from the Town House Museum in King's Lynn. She brought lots of old toys for the children to handle and play with. The children were taught how to play Jacks and how to use a whip and top. One particular favourite was the pop gun!

'Season your admiration for a while'...
14th February, 2008
On Monday Shakespeare4kidz visited Year 6 and acted out the play 'Hamlet'. All the children played some part in the play, and Hamlet senior was played by Adam. Jack played Hamlet, Joe played Claudius and James enjoyed the part of Gertrude. Arianne ended up as the king of Denmark after everyone else had been killed off!
Welcome Back
7th January, 2008
Welcome back to school, everybody! The teachers have already been in school last Thursday and Friday, working hard to get everything ready in the classrooms, and learning a little bit about how poetry and science can go together - there'll be more on that nearer the Poetry-next-the-Sea festival.
On a related note, Mr Fisher has lost his individual sized Christmas pudding. Luckily, Mrs Frary provided a massive bowlful of sponge and custard to take his mind off it, as you can see in the very blurry photograph there.
Year 5
14th December, 2007
On a frosty Friday morning, Year 5 trekked to the enchanted garden and gathered pine branches and ivy to decorate their classroom. Everyone from Year 5 wishes you a fantastic midwinter break and a fun-filled new year.
Christmas Tide 2007
8th December, 2007
Well, the weather may not have been brilliant, but the gentle glow of our wonderful paper lanterns really brightened up
the night.
Children from Wells Primary have worked hard for weeks to put together their paper lanterns, and their procession down to the
quay in the drizzle was rewarded with some kind words of encouragement from Santa, who arrived from the North Sea to a tremendous display of fireworks.
Art Exhibition
7th December, 2007
Did you visit our Art Exhibition on Friday? Every child in the school has had a piece of work framed and displayed. It really made a beautiful exhibition, and everyone was so excited as they tried to find their own picture and those of their friends. So many children were planning to buy their framed artwork, and there were people buying copies for Granny's christmas stocking, too. What a success!

good taste!

Singing In The Rain
October 18th, 2007
Year Six treated us to a hearty chorus of Singing In The Rain, today, as they told us all about the fun they had during the Year Six Challenge. The torrential rain didn't dampen their spirits at all, and in the photos some of them even seemed to be smiling as they munched their soggy sandwiches.

Year Four Are Offical Norfolk Library Book Award Reviewers
October 8th, 2007
That's right -
we've been chosen to read and vote on ten different children's books. After the hard work of reading every book we have to award stars to our
three favourites. The results go off to Norfolk Library Service to be mixed with results from other schools, and the final winner is
announced!
Year four were very excited to receive their consignment of books and have been avidly studying them ever since. Not long now
until we get out our sticky stars and attach them to the huge chart in our room.
Have you seen our book reviews on amazon.co.uk?

Year Six Rise To The Challenge
September 24th, 2007

deserve the awful weather that arrived on Monday for their challenge, but it didn't dampen their spirits one bit. Mr Baldwin was extremely
pleased to report no moaning or groaning, and a good show of team spirit from the whole class.
Song For Peace
September 21st, 2007
On Friday, during Mr Baldwin's first ever Celebration Assembly, the whole school joined thousands of other pupils across the country singing the Song For Peace.
21 September 2007 was the United Nations International Day of Peace - Peace Day. An annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence. Our song shows our committment to peace at home, and far away where warfare is a sad, everyday event for many.
