Goodbyes

July 19th, 2007

We may be used to saying goodbye to Year Six on the last day of term, but this time round was a little different. This time we're saying goodbye to all of Year Six, including their teacher, Mr Martin. Year Six - you are sure to enjoy your time at High School: work hard, and use your opportunities wisely!

We also wish Mr Martin the best of luck, and several members of staff wanted to say a big thank you to Mr Martin for the cakes which mysteriously appeared (and rapidly disappeared) in the staff room yesterday.

Concert Time (Again!)

July 18th, 2007

image Not to be outdone by yesterday's musicians, Adam and Dylan from Year Six showcased three of their favourite tunes. We were treated to a three song set, featuring tracks by My Chemical Romance, the White Stripes and Greenday. Adam and Dylan tell us they've only been learning their instruments for about a year or so. It sounded great, so they've certainly got potential!

Concert Time

July 17th, 2007

image An excellent time on Tuesday, as four talented musicians from the Music Advisory Support Service entertained us with a range of tunes, and also introduced us to some of the instruments.

More Chess Success for Danny

July 17th, 2007

image Another certificate for Wells Primary Chess Champion Danny, who travelled to Manchester for the final of the British Land Chess Challenge. We are so proud of Danny, who came within the last 2000 of the 72,000 competitors who entered the challenge. Well done, Danny!

Miss Vincent and Mrs Whisken Race For Life

July 15th, 2007

image The day had finally come Tuesday 26th June 2007. It wasn't the sunny day that we had hoped for but we were still determined to do the run and do it the best that we could. Miss Vincent came to mine for tea, where we had a healthy, energy-packed bowl of pasta. Then it was off to Houghton Hall, where we would be doing our run.

When we arrived we were suprised by how many people were there. This was excellent because everyone running was raising money for Cancer research, which is an excellent charity. First we took part in the 15 minute warm up, which made us giggle, but we definitely needed warming up as the sun had not appeared.

Then it was off to the starting line: On your marks, get set, go! We were off, though not at a very fast pace because there were so many people.

We did our best to jog/run a little and then walk a little, unfortunately we did not go quite as fast as Miss Vincent would have liked, but Mrs Wisken is pregnant (and not very fit).

The race was 5km long and by the time we had reached 4km we were daydreaming about the hog-roast waiting for us at the end. We got to the final straight, and 'Oh No!' there was Mrs Wisken's husband and Mum watching, so we had to run the end so they did not think we walked it!

We reached the finish line! Yay! We had completed our run and done it in 57 minutes. We were very proud to have done it in under an hour. We received our medals and a goody bag. Miss Vincent was nearly strangled by an arm in the process of receiving hers. Then the best prize of all - a lovely warm hog-roast.

We would both like to thank everyone who sponsored and supported us. Mrs Wisken raised #167.22 and Miss Vincent raised #91. All of this goes to Cancer Research, so again - a big thank you!

Sports Day

July 13th, 2007

image The weather stayed clear for us on Friday, apart from one or two tiny splashes of rain. Yellow team were the winners, with awards for fair play going to the Reception Yellow team, and the Key Stage 2 Green team. Well done to everyone. A special thanks, too, to the Alderman Peel High School, who helped to organise Sports Day and were responsible for its extremely smooth running! Thank you!

Wells-Gallions Exchange 2007

July 9th, 2007

We waved our Year Sixes goodbye this morning, as they crammed themselves onto a coach bound for Gallions Primary school in London.

Only a couple of weeks ago we were the hosts, as our friends from Gallions visited Wells Primary, and found out what Wells has to offer.

On target! Success for Year 4's Ben

July 8th, 2007

Last weekend, along with another 259 archers, Ben attended two archery events: the World and National Record Status Junior FITA Star And Metric Tournament and the National Record Status Junior National Championship at the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall in Shropshire.

Having moved from the under 9 category to the under 12 category Ben faced much fiercer competition than in the previous year. On the Saturday he shot 144 arrows - that's 12 dozen. He scored 950, beating his previous best by 152 points, qualifying for an English Archery Federation Junior Cross (black) award. He was placed 13th.

On the Sunday, Ben once again 12 dozen arrows. With his final six arrows he scored the maximum points of 54 to bring his total up to 903, beating his previous personal best by 128. Again he qualified for an award, this time a rose (black background). He was placed 14th.

Ben was also one of the four members of the Norfolk Team, which, with a score of 4,101, was placed 18th in the County Mixed Recurve Team event.

We're Going On A Bear Hunt!

June 28th, 2007

image What a fantastic assembly from France class! Have you read 'We're Going On A Bear Hunt'? If you haven't, then what a shame you missed this fabulous assembly. Grass, mud, caves and bears... all acted out perfectly by the intrepid France class, with full costumes. The fearless band was led by Miss Vincent, who's not afraid of bears under any circumstances. 'I just give them a stern look and they go home and hibernate,' she said when we asked her. Then she gave us a stern look... I tell you, we went home and tried to hibernate!

We are a Healthy Norfolk School

June 20th, 2007

image We have received a beautiful plaque to show our 'Healthy Norfolk School' status. It shows how much hard work and effort went into making our school a healthier place, from our healthy snacks in the canteen, Fair Trade bottled water and the Healthy Eating awareness weeks we've all taken part in. Our class aerobics every morning and Walk To School initiatives all have a part to play, too. Well done, everybody!

Junior Swimming Gala

June 11th, 2007

image More sporting success for Wells Primary as our swimming team achieves second place in the Junior Swimming Gala held at Alderman Peel High School. Well done, team!

Environmental Education Week: Coastal Creatures

June 11th, 2007

As part of their Environmental Education Week, Year Five visited the beach at Wells to work on 'Coastal Creatures'. You can view them here in the gallery section.

Congratulations Mrs Jarvis!

image Well done to Mrs Jarvis, who having attended her degree award ceremony only last week was suprised by another award ceremony in our Celebration Assembly. Our Chair Of Governors, Mr Spittle, awarded her with a special certificate to show how delighted we were to hear of her success.

Environmental Education Week: Recycled Bags

image Did you see Year Six in the Eastern Daily Press this week? Their fantastic recycled bags were featured, along with more information about all the other exciting activities we've been enjoying during Environmental Education week.

Happy Birthday, Mrs Morgan!

image What a surprise for Mrs Morgan when an everyday staff meeting turned into a surprise party for a rather special birthday. As well as being thoroughly spoilt by all her colleagues, Mrs Morgan was touched by the number of children who had somehow found out she was coming up to a special age.

We wouldn't dream of telling you how old Mrs Morgan is, but it wouldn't quite be giving the game away if we said it was the first number that was divisible by all the numbers between 1 and 6. It's also the sum of four consecutive primes, so either invite Carol Vorderman over for tea or get your maths hats on. Then sneak up to Mrs Morgan, if you dare, and say 'Excuse me, but you don't look a day over 21!'

Environmental Education Week: Floral Numeracy

image The Year One children in France Class were very busy in Numeracy this morning, hunting for the different plants we could find in our outside area.We recorded them in a table using tally marks. We were amazed by how many plants we could find in such a small space and in such a short amount of time. Some of the plants were in rather suprising places!

We tried to find out how many daisies there were on the field, but found that there were too many to count.

Cycle Helmets

image Don't forget - if you're using a cycle to travel to school you must wear a cycle helmet. In France Class, the children have been getting used to wearing their new cycle helmets for their play sessions.

Environmental Education Week: A Wish For Wells

June 5th, 2007

image Pupils from Wells Primary all took the time to draw round their hand and write down their dreams for Wells-next-the-Sea and the surrounding area. Their completed hands will form part of a stunning display along the quay this summer!

Sponsorship For Danny from The Crown Hotel

image We are immensely grateful to Mr Chris Coubrough from the Crown hotel who has agreed to sponsor Danny as he takes part in the Gigafinal of the British Land Chess Challenge at the University Of Manchester.

Chess Champion Danny

May 14th, 2007

We are so proud of Danny, who travelled through to the British Land Chess Challenge Megafinal in Norwich on Saturday where he won five out of six of his games. Wow! Danny will now be travelling to the University of Manchester in July to take part in one of the two Gigafinals.

Well done, Danny!

Poetry-next-the-Sea - We have a winner!

May 5th, 2007

image Well done to all our children who attended the Poetry-next-the-Sea competition to read their poems from the 2007 anthology 'Happy As A Comet'. The title came from Lola's poem 'The Things I Remember', and she also drew the picture for the front cover of the book. As well as Lola's poem, the anthology also features Haydn, Joshua, Codie, Archie, Stephen and Adam from our school.

Special congratulations go to Archie, though, whose poem was chosen as the best out of all those entered. Sadly, Archie couldn't be there to collect his prize - the Helen Flanagan Award - but his mum was able to receive it on his behalf. The photo shows Archie's mum collecting the award from Helen's sister.

You can read their poems in the Poetry Cupboard.

More success for our football team!

May 3rd, 2007

image Here is a photo of the team we took to the football festival at APHS and their team trophy for taking part. Despite the very cold weather, the year four and five children had a great morning and showed a fantastic team spirit throughout. Good work, team!

Soccer

April 27th, 2007

image On Wednesday twelve pupils attended the round robin football tournament at the Alderman Peel High School. Our two teams of six did extremely well and brought back a total of three trophies and six medals. Well done to all of our intrepid sporting pupils!

Our New School Council

April 20th, 2007

image Every half term, each class elects two School Council representatives.

In the past year, our School Council has made decisions about new playground equipment and organised the renaming of our new canteen, The Crusty Crab Cafe, taking your ideas along to each meeting and letting you know what was decided.

During Walk To School week they'll be organising your Walk To School rewards. Don't they work hard and do a good job?

Don't forget to talk to your class School Council representative if you have any ideas to make our school a better place.

Soil Association Visit Year 5

April 18th, 2007

People now buy their goods from a big supermarket so it is necessary to build more railways, roads and docks. Because we have more ships, cars and planes, it is causing more pollution to the environment and there is more global warming which is affecting the environment. People buy foods out of season which is a problem.

Harm is done to our planet because food is being transported from all over the world, which uses tons and tons of fuel for all the container ships, cars, lorries and planes. For example, bananas come from the Dominican Republic and plums from Chile. This damage can be avoided by buying local produce, like apples and plums instead of getting them from the USA and other countries. If a local store has not got what you need, ask a big supermarket to stock local produce. Try to avoid buying food that is flown in from other countries. You know it is from another country by checking the food label.

We need to stop buying food from other countries because we can just grow things here in the UK and not import them.

Amazing Success For Lola (And Dad!)

March 30th, 2007

image For two terms now, Lola and her father have come into school early - not long after eight o'clock - and worked hard to practise phonics, spelling and reading skills.

Two terms sounds like a very long time, but in fact Lola has worked her way through the book in an amazingly short time. Most impressive!

Chess Tournament 2007

March 30th, 2007

image Every year, the chess club takes part in the British Land Chess Challenge. Huge congratulations to Danny from Year 6 who won every single one of his seven games to run away with the Wells Primary School Chess Club cup. Special congratulations have to go to our Key Stage 1 chess club members - if you look carefully at the scores below you can see the effort they put in has really paid off.

K'nex Challenge 2007

March 28th, 2007

image Two teams entered the Young Engineer's K'nex Challenge this year at the Volkswagen car showroom in Kings Lynn.

Maddie and Tim, Joe and Emily had to create a rescue vehicle - a fire engine, ambulance, police car or any other type of rescue vehicle. The vehicle had to have certain features, such as an extending ladder and a motor.

Once the vehicles were created, the children had to describe them and give them a name. Our teams were up against stiff competition. They didn't make the semi-finals this time, but did extremely well and created some very interesting vehicles.

Germany Class Visit St. Nicholas' Church

March 22nd, 2007

image Germany class spent part of Thursday morning having their RE lesson at St Nicholas church. They were extremely excited!

Reverend Douglas gave them a guided tour of the church and he really impressed the children when he was able to answer all of their questions.

The class thought that Eric the Eagle made a really smart lectern. He was made of brass, and extremely shiny! Do you know what a lectern is for?

Bryony had to stand on her tip toes to see over the pulpit!

Year Three Say Goodbye

March 22nd, 2007

image Many thanks and best wishes to Tamsin Carnes, who has been working with Year Three for a number of weeks. Tamsin is on a post-graduate teacher training course, and we're sure she'll make a fine teacher. Thank you so much for all your hard work, Tamsin!

Comic Relief 2007 - The Talent Show

March 16th, 2007

Wow - the talent show went down a treat! Lots of singing and dancing, plus some original songs from Dylan and Devan. African Drumming, too - there was so much to see and so much to enjoy. Well done to everyone who took part!

World Maths Day

March 14th, 2007

On March the 14th, pupils from Wells Primary took part in the World Maths Day challenge. Children from all over the world joined together to answer 10 million mental maths questions. But they didn't just reach that target of ten million - they doubled it! And, if you took part, you helped to achieve that - brilliant stuff!

Year Six Soccer Treat

March 6th, 2007

imageColin Watts at Norwich City Academy gave Wells Primary School four free tickets for the Norwich versus Derby County match. Year Six waited with bated breath as the names were drawn out of a hat. Lucky Dean, Ryan, James and Danny!

The result? Derby won: 2-1!

Wells Primary is a Fair Trade School

March 2nd, 2007

image Did you know that Wells-next-the-Sea is a Fair Trade town? Because so many people in the town are willing to stock Fair Trade goods, Wells is officially a Fair Trade town! And Wells Primary school does its bit too - all the teachers drink Fair Trade tea and coffee in the staff room. Perhaps you purchase Fair Trade products at home, too.

Kate Clodd came in to tell pupils all about Fair Trade goods, and used a rather unfair tug-of-war match to show how Fair Trade products can help make life a little fairer for people all around the globe.

Nobody likes it when things are unfair - the message was to spend a little time thinking about who gets your support.

Cycling Proficiency

February 28th, 2007

image How safe are you on your bike? It's so important to be safe on the roads, and some pupils from Year 5 have been working hard learning the vital skills necessary to keep themselves and others safe on the roads.

Mr Golding kindly gave up his own time to help them out, ably assisted by a number of parent volunteers. Thank you all so much for helping out - it really is good to have your help!

Library Visit

February 27th, 2007

image Do you visit our local library? The Nursery had great fun at Wells Library, looking at all the books and meeting 'Linda The Librarian'. They even had a story to listen to, and everyone enjoys a good story!

Tuning Up with the City Of London Sinfonia

February 18th, 2007

Our musicians had the time of their lives in the week before half-term as they played alongside professional musicians from the City Of London Sinfonia - a top London orchestra. The three-day residency included working with composer Jane Wells to compose music based on the theme 'Times Of The Day'. You can visit Jane's website here.

On Tuesday the pupils travelled to Kings Lynn to watch a rehearsal of a performance being given that night by the City Of London Sinfonia. Later that week, after much hard work, the children gave their own performance to the entire school and their parents. Did you see the article in the Dereham and Fakenham times?

Germany Class Assembly

February 8th, 2007

Germany class entertained the school and parents with their assembly about castles. You might remember they enjoyed a day trip to Norwich Castle and came back filled with enthusiasm. We listened to exciting reports of their experiences while photographs played in the background. A quick demonstration of drawbridges using some beautifully-made model castles was followed by a display of shields - everyone had made their own shield with their own specially-chosen symbols on! And to finish with? A rousing song guaranteed to bring jollity to any cold evening in a draughty old castle...

Poet Solves Mysteries Of The Universe

January 29th, 2007

image Ever wondered where time goes once we've finished with it? Why wouldn't you want an avocado for an uncle? Just when is a boy not a boy. All these, an other mysterious questions, were brought up by poet Chrissie Gittins when she joined us for a fun-packed assembly.

Year Six were fortunate enough to qualify for an extra dose of Chrissie's excellent poetry as they joined her for an intensive poetry workshop. They'll be sharing some of their work with us soon.

France And Germany Classes Visit Norwich Castle

January 25th, 2007

image France and Germany Classes were historians for the day at Norwich Castle. They had great fun guessing which objects from the past were used in homes long ago and had a go at using a Victorian vacuum cleaner. It wasn't powered by electricity so it was hard working the suction mechanism by hand! They enjoyed a tour of the Keep and explored the Archaeology room.

African Drumming Concert

image Year Four and Year Six displayed their African drumming skills for an excited audience of parents and children. Some of our parents were so impressed they stayed behind to have a go themselves!

It's A Baby!

December 7th, 2006

Wow - what a performance! Well done to Key Stage One and the Nursery for a fantastic performance crammed full of angels, hardworking innkeepers, exotic dancers, kings, shepherds, animals and much, much more.

PFA Christmas Fete

December 6th, 2006

Not just the usual favourites, but an art stall with all sorts of craft activities, second-hand clothing and lots of different competitions - a Christmas picture from Key Stage 1 children, a story or a poem from Key Stage 2 and a quiz sheet to keep the adults occupied. Stay tuned to find out the winners!

You can find out more about Wells Primary's hard-working PFA here, including pictures from their last event, the extremely popular fancy dress disco, just before half-term.

Year Five Assembly

November 17th, 2006

image Year Five presented a great assembly about their experiences at Holt Hall. It certainly sounded interesting, and the whole school was very glad that their Victorian teacher didn't return to Wells Primary with them!

Wells Primary is a healthy school

November 13th, 2006

image Wells Primary proudly receives its third certificate in the Healthy Norfolk Schools scheme. Mrs Jennings is keen to apply for the fourth certificate, so keep up the good work in school and keep going with your exercise DVDs!

Year Six experience a world of work

On the 9th and 10th November, Year 6 pupils were introduced to the 'World of Work'. On Day 1, they thought about why countries import and export goods and services and why it is important to use scarce resources responsibly.

They also became manufacturers and Stock Exchange Traders to understand the economic inequalities that exist in our world and how some richer nations can help poorer nations.

On Day 2, the pupils designed and marketed a product suitable for a fictitional country, having learnt about its culture, geography and economy.

The session ended with each group presenting their products to the other groups. Our pupils learnt a huge amount. Mrs Ledger and Mrs Hagan, the workshop leaders, congratulated the Year 6 pupils on being such a wonderfully enthusiastic group.

A trip back in time for Year 5

November 1st, 2006

What a curious bunch of Victorian ragamuffins turned up to school on Wednesday! Their smart school uniforms had been replaced by shawls, blankets, hobnailed boots and flat caps, and most of them carried their belongings in an old pillowcase or sack. We'll find out what they thought of their no-frills, old-fashioned three days when they get back.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

image Year Six had an excellent time at The Corn Exchange, Kings Lynn, where they saw the Shakespeare For Kids production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Many thanks to the Wells Carnival Committee, who provided a generous donation to subsidise this educational and enjoyable visit.

Year 6 Assembly

October 12th, 2006

Year Six presented an informative assembly showcasing all their work on coasts over the past half term.

Welcome to the Crusty Crab Cafe!

September 23rd, 2006

There was great excitement in assembly on Friday as Mrs Jennings revealed the name of our newly-redecorated canteen.

Spongebob fans throughout the school can rejoice: The Crusty Crab Cafe is open for business, although we don't think Mrs Frary is going to be serving you a Krabby Patty any time soon!

Funny Glasses And Strange Noises!

September 22nd, 2006

image Germany class have been learning about Health and Growth in Science. They had a fun afternoon when Mrs Bishop, a Schools Health Advisor, came to visit. She talked to the children about her job and showed the children how she did hearing and sight tests. The class had fun trying on the funny glasses and listening to the strange noises made by the sound machine! Mrs Bishop weighed everyone and recorded this on their own special chart. Click on the pictures for a closer look.

Germany class would also like to thank Mrs Warnes for bringing six month old Sophie in to visit them this week.

Year Six rise to the challenge!

September 18th, 2006

image Setting off early on Monday morning, Year Six rose to their hiking challenge.

THUD!

September 8th, 2006

image What's all that noise - we always thought you were supposed to be quiet in school!

That's right - African Drumming every Friday. Year 4 get to try their hand from 1:00 until 2:00, while Year 6 take up the second slot of the afternoon.

Let's Aerobicise!

September 5th, 2006

image Year Four get moving to the beat. Is that Mrs Gates grooving at the back?

Pupils returning from their laid-back summer holidays were in for a bit of a surprise on their first day back. Aerobics!

Just ten minutes of exercise every day is sure to help you get fitter, and if you can have fun while you're moving then so much the better. Is your class doing their ten minutes a day?
